I’m waking up on the last day of a retreat with Carrie Newcomer and she started out our first night by talking about noticings and how just one thing a day can make a difference. So maybe there’s something of the universe is speaking to me on this.

My most essential app on my devices is Day One (journaling app) and would be perfect for something like this. One of my favorite features is one that won’t be experienced until after a year - the On this Day feature. This feature shows you what you shared on that day in past years. So a noticings would be beautiful with this to be able to not only share the noticing in the moment but also to be reminded of it when the day comes around again.

Wonderful--a great way to let all this infernal tech work FOR us and not against us!

You asked me to send photos. I have been wondering why birds keep flocking to my patio and now I have the answer. They are building a nest on my garden gloves on my shelf on my “found work bench” there. Looking forward to some eggs, maybe?🥚🪺

Denise and I just finished worshipping with you and the folks at Trinity. We both appreciated your approach to the Gospel reading. Thanks for the invite!

For 3 days this week we had about 300 Starlings behind our house. Noise beyond noise, but I’m in awe instead of annoyed. And when they take flight and the murmuration shape shifts in harmony, it’s surely a beauty to behold. It occurred to me that noise has purpose. There’s a bit of noise in my life right now, and that instead of fighting it (think Tom Skerritt in Steel Magnolias) to prepare for the harmony that’s coming.

In the midst of all this, a friend sent me this: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2x6L1_vjKj/?igsh=MjJ0b2kwY2ZmN3g0

Remind me sometime to send you the murmuration video—food for thought! Good to see you and family today.

I love the simple act of calling it “light show” 🥰

I notice birds too - a hawk, lots of nuthatches & blue jays, and many Vs of honking Canada geese this week!

Yes, light show is brilliant!

We have lots of Canada geese in residence on the small lake where we live—they’re aggressive buggers but I have a soft spot for them. I blame Mary Oliver 😬

This is such a great reminder MaryAnn to notice the ordinary. I hate to admit that I spend so much time in nature that I don't take notice unless I see or hear something unusual. Just slowing down and doing a visio divina or audio divina and noticing everything is such a rich and humbling experience at the same time. Thanks again for this great post.

Visio divina, audio divina--wonderful suggestions.

Thank you so much, once again, for reading!

All the leaves have left “my” oak tree outside my window so the birds have decided that my patio filled with dried flowers and a shopping cart I dragged home from McPherson Square and a comfy chair and ottoman that I snagged from the dumpster is their new protected place to weather the rest of the winter days. I’ve decided Iona and RBG must not really be kitties as they could care less about the intrusion they watch from the sliding glass door.

This is beautiful. It reminds me of the Rumi quote - If everything around seems dark, look again, you may be the light.

A good reminder to take in the small things. I live in Birmingham, AL, and I actually have grass. It’s my first time seeing the grass begin to change color. It reminds me of Mathew 6:30. I don’t water the grass, but yet he clothes them. If he take cares of the fields, he’ll take care of me too.
