I didn’t know I needed that… but I needed that:
I’m trying not to review that 1:45 of video like the Zapruder film, but I did look hard at the room Roy and Keeley were in. Soccer bedspread, sensible curtains… a kids’ bedroom? Whaa?
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” from the Stones: A commentary on the plot to come? Or is this their reminder to the audience to tamp down expectations? In any case, we finally have a new much-needed cultural reference for that song to replace Trump rallies and The Big Chill.
The trailer inspired me to make a few predictions and/or share ones that have been on my mind for a while:
Ted will stay in London, and his son will move to be with him. Michelle has a lifelong dream to teach English somewhere and feels it wouldn’t be good to bring Henry. Or something like that. Everybody wins. Ted gets to be the father he needs to be, but gets to stay with “the family we make along the way.” I won’t be mad if Ted moves back to the US, but he has never once mentioned friendships or anything tying him to the US except for his son. Is his mother even still alive? I guess he didn’t have siblings? What would bring him back besides Henry?
Higgins and his wife Julie have been together for 29 years as of season two. Roy and Keeley will get engaged at their 30th anniversary party. I don’t understand people who say they are bound for Splitsville simply because they’re at different places in their lives/careers. First, I don’t think they really are—both have switched careers or taken on new responsibilities in the last year. But taking the point on its face: it can actually be really beneficial to have couples that aren’t stepping on the gas with their careers at the exact same time. It can be really hard, especially if you have children, if both partners are going full bore professionally. If Roy and Keeley sort things out, it could be wonderful for Keeley to have him there to support her. Then when she’s more established, he can lean in for a while. Or [what a concept!] she can be “boss ass bitch” for the duration!
Roy will take over the coaching of the team, with Ted and Trent Crimm creating a nonprofit foundation to support mental health issues in sports.
Jamie will have a nice juicy arc, including coming out.
There’s been lots of speculation about what will become of Nate. The Internet seems divided on a possible redemption. Some think Ted will be like Whoville to his Grinch, melting his heart through the power of love or whatever. Others want to see him get his comeuppance as he flies too close to the sun and Rupert betrays/destroys him.
Has nobody considered the third possibility: Nate never gets redeemed but doesn’t get his comeuppance either. He continues to thrive and succeed and even win as a coach, while remaining profoundly damaged and dangerous. It would be a gutsy thing for them to do. It would pop the bubble of the show a bit, because that’s not how the moral universe works in TL-land, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.
The preview certainly played up Nate’s isolation (at the restaurant) and insecurity (several shots of him looking worried, thank you Nick Mohammed you’re a legend). I’ll save my final prediction for right before the show starts, since it connects to stuff I’ll be sharing about seasons one and two.
What did you think of the trailer, and what are your predictions?
Themes of the first season? Growth. Honesty. Do the right thing. Consequences.
I am so pleased to see Trent Crimm reappear.
